Top 5 Run Challenges in Cape Town + What to Wear for Each One

Cape Town isn’t just one of the most beautiful cities in the world — it’s also home to some of the most gritty, iconic, and community-fuelled running events on the calendar. Whether you're chasing a PB or just chasing sunrise, these are five challenges every Cape Town runner should tackle.

Here’s your hit list — plus the gear checklist to get you through every single one.

🏃 1. Gun Run (10K, 21K)

When: Usually September
Vibe: Fast, flat(ish), and always vibey. The route takes you along Cape Town’s coastline — perfect for a personal best.

What to Wear:

  • Lightweight, sweat-wicking top – avoid cotton, opt for performance fabric that breathes (like the UP Women's Tank or Men’s Tee)

  • Chafe-free shorts – look for something with a compression liner or smooth inner seams

  • Running socks – avoid thick cotton; go for thin, moisture-wicking ones (like Balega or Falke)

  • Optional: Light jacket or windbreaker for the early start

👟 Race Hack: Tie a small knot in your laces to avoid mid-race unties. Cape Town breeze loves to sabotage laces.

🏞 2. Two Oceans Half Marathon (21.1K)

When: April
Vibe: The most famous half marathon in South Africa. Rolling hills, mountain views, and electric energy.

What to Wear:

  • Performance top with a slightly looser fit for breathability

  • Compression shorts or leggings – especially helpful for long downhill sections

  • Running belt or vest – for gels, keys, or phone

  • UP Windbreaker or Arm Sleeves – optional layers if you start cold

🏁 3. Cape Town Marathon (42.2K)

When: October
Vibe: The big city marathon energy. You’ll need grit, gear, and a lot of carbs.

What to Wear:

  • Ultra-light singlet or performance tee – minimal weight, max airflow

  • Shorts with built-in liners or split-leg cut – anything you’ve trained in before

  • Anti-chafe cream (everywhere) – thighs, underarms, nipples (trust us)

  •  Performance Socks

🧊 Pro Tip: Bring a change of shirt for the ride home. The salt crust is real.

🔁 4. UP 4x4x48 Challenge

When: Annual challenge (or anytime you dare)
Vibe: David Goggins-style suffer fest. 4 miles (6.4km) every 4 hours for 48 hours.

What to Wear:

  • UP Shorts + Performance Top – you'll need multiple pairs

  • Recovery-friendly layers – think: hoodie, windbreaker, base layers.

  • Mental game: This one’s all heart

🏔 5. Outlaw160 by UP (Relay Event)

When: Yearly — exclusive to UP community
Vibe: 160km team relay from dawn ‘til dark. No frills, all grit.

What to Wear:

  • UP Windbreaker – built for the early hours and those 2am handoffs

  • Your go-to UP base layer – comfort is king

  • Support Crew Fit: Stay fresh and represent — even when you’re not on the clock

🎒 Gear Checklist (No Matter the Race)

  • Compression or relaxed-fit shorts

  • Layers for cold starts (Windbreaker = gold)

  • Socks that won’t ruin your race

  • Hydration plan

  • Post-run hoodie or trackpants for recovery vibes
